What is JPG?

JPG is thirty years old and still the safest picture format in existence. It compresses by discarding detail the eye handles poorly, which works beautifully on photographs and badly on text, logos and sharp edges, where it leaves a visible haze. Every device ever made can open it.

What is PNG?

PNG was created as a free replacement for GIF and compresses without throwing anything away. Lettering stays razor sharp, transparency works properly, and the same image survives being saved a hundred times. The trade is size: a photograph in PNG can be five times a JPG.

What changes when you convert JPG to PNG?

Nothing further is lost, but nothing is recovered either. The detail JPG discarded when the file was created is already gone; PNG simply preserves what remains, without adding more damage on future saves. Expect the file to grow.

How long does it take?

Images finish almost instantly. Conversion runs on our server rather than in your browser, so the only real wait is the upload itself.

What happens to my files?

Your file is uploaded to our server because the conversion runs there. A cleanup task runs every hour and deletes anything older than an hour, so nothing you upload survives more than about two hours. We do not open your files, we do not keep copies, and no account is needed to use the converter.
