What is BMP?

BMP stores pixels raw, with essentially no compression. A photograph that would be two megabytes as a JPG can be thirty as a BMP. It exists today mostly as output from old Windows programs and scanners.

What is JPG?

JPG is thirty years old and still the safest picture format in existence. It compresses by discarding detail the eye handles poorly, which works beautifully on photographs and badly on text, logos and sharp edges, where it leaves a visible haze. Every device ever made can open it.

What changes when you convert BMP to JPG?

JPG discards some detail to make the file small. On photographs this is invisible at normal quality settings. On text, diagrams and sharp edges it shows as a faint haze, so prefer PNG for those.

How long does it take?

Images finish almost instantly. Conversion runs on our server rather than in your browser, so the only real wait is the upload itself.

What happens to my files?

Your file is uploaded to our server because the conversion runs there. A cleanup task runs every hour and deletes anything older than an hour, so nothing you upload survives more than about two hours. We do not open your files, we do not keep copies, and no account is needed to use the converter.
