Why convert GIF to PNG?

Extracting a still frame at better colour depth, or getting a logo out of an ageing GIF.

What is GIF?

GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, which is why photographs look banded and posterised in it. Its one enduring advantage is animation, and that is now the only reason anyone still makes them.

What is PNG?

PNG was created as a free replacement for GIF and compresses without throwing anything away. Lettering stays razor sharp, transparency works properly, and the same image survives being saved a hundred times. The trade is size: a photograph in PNG can be five times a JPG.

What changes when you convert GIF to PNG?

Only the first frame is converted. GIF animation has nowhere to live in PNG, and the colour palette, capped at 256 in the original, does not improve just because the new format allows more.

How long does it take?

Images finish almost instantly. Conversion runs on our server rather than in your browser, so the only real wait is the upload itself.

What happens to my files?

Your file is uploaded to our server because the conversion runs there. A cleanup task runs every hour and deletes anything older than an hour, so nothing you upload survives more than about two hours. We do not open your files, we do not keep copies, and no account is needed to use the converter.
