Scans arrive as TIFF and are far too large to send anywhere.
TIFF is the workhorse of scanners, print shops and archives. It stores images without loss, can hold multiple pages, and carries far more colour information than the web needs. Files are enormous and browsers refuse to display them.
JPG is thirty years old and still the safest picture format in existence. It compresses by discarding detail the eye handles poorly, which works beautifully on photographs and badly on text, logos and sharp edges, where it leaves a visible haze. Every device ever made can open it.
| TIFF | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Released | 1986 | 1992 |
| Developed by | Aldus, later Adobe | Joint Photographic Experts Group |
| Compression | Lossless (usually) | Lossy |
| Transparency | Yes | No |
| Animation | No | No |
| Typical size | Very large | Small |
| Best suited to | Scanning, printing, archives | Photographs, anything shared |
| Support | Professional software | Absolutely universal |
Two things to know. JPG has no transparency, so any transparent area becomes solid white. And JPG is lossy, so fine detail is discarded on the way in - fine for photographs, less kind to screenshots, logos and lettering, where you may see a faint haze around the edges.
Images finish almost instantly. Conversion runs on our server rather than in your browser, so the only real wait is the upload itself.
Your file is uploaded to our server because the conversion runs there. A cleanup task runs every hour and deletes anything older than an hour, so nothing you upload survives more than about two hours. We do not open your files, we do not keep copies, and no account is needed to use the converter.
