PDF grew out of Adobe Camelot project and became an open ISO standard in 2008. Its whole purpose is that a document looks the same on every screen and every printer, which it achieves by freezing the layout and embedding the fonts. That strength is also its limitation: a PDF describes where marks sit on a page, not what a paragraph is, so editing one means rebuilding it.
A TXT file is just characters, with no formatting, no images and no structure. That poverty is the point: nothing can be lost in translation, every tool on earth can read it, and the file stays tiny.

You keep the words and lose everything else: images, tables, columns, fonts and page breaks. Reading order can also surprise you, because a PDF has no real notion of which column comes first.
Most documents finish in a few seconds. Conversion runs on our server rather than in your browser, so the slow part is usually the upload. Long reports and image-heavy files take proportionally longer.
Your file is uploaded to our server because the conversion runs there. A cleanup task runs every hour and deletes anything older than an hour, so nothing you upload survives more than about two hours. We do not open your files, we do not keep copies, and no account is needed to use the converter.
