DOCX arrived with Office 2007 and replaced the old binary DOC. Underneath it is a ZIP archive of XML files, which is why it is smaller, harder to corrupt and readable by software other than Word. It stores structure - headings, paragraphs, styles - so text reflows naturally when you edit it.
ODT is the text half of OpenDocument, an open standard adopted by many governments precisely because no single vendor controls it. It is the native format of LibreOffice and OpenOffice, and technically very close to DOCX: a ZIP of XML describing structured text.

Both formats describe the same kind of content, so the text itself comes through intact. Fine details - exotic fonts, precise spacing, unusual table borders - can shift slightly, because Word and ODT do not draw every element the same way.
