The most common request on the internet, and usually for one reason: someone sent a finished PDF and you need to change a sentence in it.
PDF grew out of Adobe Camelot project and became an open ISO standard in 2008. Its whole purpose is that a document looks the same on every screen and every printer, which it achieves by freezing the layout and embedding the fonts. That strength is also its limitation: a PDF describes where marks sit on a page, not what a paragraph is, so editing one means rebuilding it.
DOCX arrived with Office 2007 and replaced the old binary DOC. Underneath it is a ZIP archive of XML files, which is why it is smaller, harder to corrupt and readable by software other than Word. It stores structure - headings, paragraphs, styles - so text reflows naturally when you edit it.

A PDF stores where marks sit on the page, not what a paragraph is, so the Word file is a reconstruction rather than a copy. Ordinary reports and letters come across cleanly; multi-column layouts, heavy tables and unusual fonts usually need a few minutes of tidying. One case has no workaround: a scanned PDF is a photograph of text, and without OCR there are no letters in the file to recover.
Most documents finish in a few seconds. Conversion runs on our server rather than in your browser, so the slow part is usually the upload. Long reports and image-heavy files take proportionally longer.
Your file is uploaded to our server because the conversion runs there. A cleanup task runs every hour and deletes anything older than an hour, so nothing you upload survives more than about two hours. We do not open your files, we do not keep copies, and no account is needed to use the converter.
