Rescuing video from the Flash era, which nothing plays any more.
FLV was the format of internet video for a decade, until Flash was discontinued at the end of 2020. Nothing plays it natively any more, so an FLV file is essentially an archive waiting to be converted.
MP4 is the format the world settled on. It is a container rather than a codec, almost always holding H.264 video and AAC audio, and there is no device, browser, editor or social platform that refuses it. If you are not sure what to convert something to, the answer is MP4.
| FLV | MP4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Released | 2002 | 2003 |
| Developed by | Macromedia, later Adobe | MPEG |
| Type | Container | Container |
| Usual codecs | H.263, VP6, H.264 | H.264 or H.265 with AAC |
| File size | Small | Small for the quality |
| Best suited to | Nothing - Flash is gone | Everything, honestly |
| Support | Effectively dead | Universal |
The video is decoded and re-encoded, which costs a small amount of quality - invisible once, noticeable if you convert the same clip back and forth repeatedly. Resolution, frame rate and aspect ratio are preserved. Going from FLV to MP4 changes the wrapper and the codec, not the footage itself.
Video takes real time. A short clip finishes in under a minute, while a full-length film can take considerably longer, because every frame has to be decoded and encoded again. Uploading a large file is usually the slowest part of all.
Your file is uploaded to our server because the conversion runs there. A cleanup task runs every hour and deletes anything older than an hour, so nothing you upload survives more than about two hours. We do not open your files, we do not keep copies, and no account is needed to use the converter.
